Caution: this thread is very important for you if you are a first-year university student!
Many of us have experienced the feeling of fear and loneliness during our first year at university. We needed someone to tell us how we can succeed in this journey. Thus, I have decided to write some useful tips for all first-year students on this blog.1- Balance your social life with your academics.
Making friends and enjoying your time with them is the only fun part of the university. Thus, try to make as many friendships as you can. You can go and have lunch with them during your free time, or you can meet them and have coffee at the university. However, you have to consider that your main priority at university is studying. You can take a break at any time you want, but never forget to do your assignments and study well for your quizzes and tests.
2- Get organized.
Courses at university have so many assignments, quizzes, presentations, and due dates. You may also have other responsibilities, like work, volunteering, and workshops. Staying on top of everything needs to be organized. Calendars are the golden keys to remember everything. You can use a printed calendar or calendar on your phone. Try to put everything that has to be done as soon as you learn about it. In addition, try to have a "To-Do List" by the begging of each week. This will help you to remember your priorities. You can do this list by checking the courses' syllabuses every week.
3- Don't delay your assignments.
The most famous bad habit of university students is that they wait until the last minute of the due date. To do well on your assigmnemtn, you have to solve them regularly. This will help you to avoid stress and will give you enough time to do them.
Never hesitate to do assignments on the same day they will be given to you. Otherwise, you will gradually start losing grads!
4- Learn to take good notes.
There are many important skills you have to learn before starting your journey at university. One of these useful skills is "taking good notes". Instructors will mention so many things during the class and they will elaborate a lot on every single idea. So, you need to be selective and write only important notes and reminders. You can write the main keywords and phrases to get the main ideas.
Don't waste your time on writing every single word the instructor will be saying. Otherwise, you will not be able to concentrate and give enough attention. Also, check if the slides are available online. If they are, print them out and supply them with your notes.
5-Use the resources available.
You will have a wealth of resources available that can help you to insure your learning. Don't feel shy to ask about the facilities the university offers for students. During your future researches, you will need resources to support them. You can find these resources in the university library or the online search engines that universities offer exclusively to students. So, take the benefit of them to do official and academic work.
6- Ask about volunteering opportunities.
After your graduation from university, you have to have a good and powerful CV for your future career path. Attending workshops and do volunteering will be valued on your CV. Volunteering experiences will improve your communication skills and make you a more sociable person who has the ability to solve any problem. However, you need to make sure that volunteering will not overlap with your studying.
These are the main tips you need to take into account at the beginning of your university journey. However, never hesitate to ask other people about their university experience and how they managed their experience to make it more effective and unforgettable.
Never give up and always work hard.
Best wishes!
